As a teacher, I believe in catering lessons to the student. Whether starting from scratch or developing existing technique, I can always make lessons fun while helping people improve. Giving private and group lessons, running projects to help underprivileged children and teaching at the Kodaly Institute in Hungary, my experience speaks volumes. Having been tutored by a number of talented musicians such as Catriona MacDonald (Blazin’ Fiddles) and Aidan O’Rourke (Lau), I possesses an intricate knowledge of my instruments to compliment an innate talent for passing it on. I have also taught with very many reputable institutions like the Sage Gateshead and Live Music Now.
I have also tutored online for three years now and have overcome many logistical issues to make the lessons feel as interactive as possible. Online pupils can expect recordings, videos and sheet music to assist them with learning.
There is also a two hour group work shop available for all of my pupils with I currently run once a month.
Chris is an encouraging and supportive teacher; he has a knack of making lessons enjoyable and fun whilst at the same time helping me to improve. Chris tailors each lesson to my own ability making it challenging yet rewarding, with a good mix of technical and musical aspects. He was extremely helpful when I was buying my first fiddle which was very useful for a novice. It is a real privilege to have fiddle lessons with Chris, his enthusiasm is infectious. – Nicola McMeekin

GuitarGraduating as a guitarist from the Newcastle university folk degree having studied under Chris Newman, Ian Stephenson and Mic Wright I started performing with an excellent trio ne3folk to demonstrate my skills as a guitarist. Releasing ‘Show us your Reds’ in 2014. I was also fortunate enough to work along side guitarist David Wood for a number of years and learned a great deal about accompanying traditional music. My skills as a guitarist were also sought out by International fiddle player Nellie Quinn leading to our tour of the westcoast of Canada ‘Punters Reunion’.
